The Buzz: Mayfield, McCaffrey, Hopkins

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield drops back to pass against the Ravens.

From a fantasy perspective, Baker Mayfield as your starting quarterback is probably not what you’re looking for – at least not yet. But from a real football standpoint, Baker as quarterback of the Browns is working pretty well. The Browns are 9-3, and sitting pretty for a playoff spot – and they’ve made the playoffs just once since returning to the NFL in 1999. Browns’ general manager Andrew Berry has some critical contract decisions to make in the next year or so about Mayfield – 5th year option, big-money extension. “I think the growth that Baker has shown, in terms of his decision-making, protecting the football and ultimately making plays that help us win games [is impressive],” Berry said. “I think everyone can see his growth really from quarter to quarter to quarter over the course of the season and he certainly deserves a lot of credit for the work that he’s put in.” – via

So the big plan for your fantasy playoffs was to get Christian McCaffrey back, and then go win some cash, huh? If so, The Czar hopes your playoffs don’t start until Week 15. McCaffrey has played in just three games this season, and if you made your playoffs despite his absence, congratulations. But as for a McCaffrey return in Week 14, “at this point, I don’t expect him to play,” Panthers coach Matt Rhule told reporters Thursday. via – ESPN

An Arizona offense that is averaging 28 points a game for the season, is putting up 22 points a game in a current three game losing streak. The Cards play the Giants on Sunday, and they maye have to take on a hot defense without it’s best offensive weapon. No disrespect to Kyler Murray. – ProFootballTalk
